Yes, Gateway gave no error and had all approx. 4000 records.  It is possible
that the 16 offending records were incorrectly loaded by Gateway also.  I
did not go and see.  Just checked on the count and any message reported.
I'm thinking it is a carriage return/line feed combo that somehow got stuck
in a text field when my source created their Excel file.  Most of the bad
records only had two square box characters, but there was one that had more
than one set.  It has been cleaned out.

That's a clever way of comparing...   So are you saying the import from
Gateway worked fine, but the load did not?   Interesting that Gateway is
more "forgiving"

        I unloaded the imported data as csv, added it as another tab to the
original
        spreadsheet and compared the key field from the original with the
unload
        data.  Found 16 offending records.  Each record had two "funny"
characters
        (open square box) appended to any one field of the record.  I am
sure when I
        remove those it will work flawlessly.
