I bet you have not fully explored all options and techniques
to take advantage of currently integrated "Rich Text" object
in 7.6/Turbo V-8 report designers.
To get started, all you need to do is to save your existing MS
Word file(s) as external RTF. Then:
01. Keep them as external files and use "RBBE filename.rtf"
command to manage external .rtf file
OR
02. Load them as LONG VARBIT data type in a separate table,
and manage all .rtf files in a form by designing a cool
interface using "DB Rich Text" control.
OR
03. One time only, integrate your original .rtf file as
"Rich Text" control with "MailMerge" option in a report
designer. Once everything is set accordingly, your end
users (nurses) will never have to muck with it anymore.
Tip:
During the runtime, in your application, you can always
bring up the desired report with Rich Text for any last
minute updates by using the "REPORT reportname MODAL"
command.
I understand that v9 will have a much more robust editor,
but that is too far off for my needs.
Hmmmm ... I think by the time you find an alternative, the
RBTI Dream Team might have a big surprise for you.

The long anticipated Valentine's
updates are now officially released. All R:BASE add-on product
updates are scheduled for next week. Guess what is next?
So my users want to use WORD (ugh). How are others interfacing
this? I need some ideas. Usually, I would shell out to the RTF
editor from a field in a form. Is there a way to use WORD for
this? Or do I need to have a whole extravagant system to shell
out and launch WORD and save a file name and try to figure out
how to associate that with a record?
For some reason, if you really have to use MS Word to achieve a
very simple task (as far as I know), you may retrieve R:BASE
data by defining a System DSN Data Source or DSN-Less connection
using the native R:BASE ODBC or Oterro driver.
I am trying to make this as easy as possible - Nurses are using
this and they are not all equal in computer skills, so my goal
is user-friendly. Any ideas appreciated!
Stick with what you know the best. Capitalize on the strengths,
integrated all-in-one tools, and most importantly the power of
R:BASE!
Believe me, if you put your heart and soul into it, you can do
anything and everything in R:BASE!
