Once every few months I have to down everything - computers, switches, router &
modem.
Yesterday, for example, I could do email but no web sites would come up. I
shut everything down (it was nice and quiet) and brought it up one hardware at
a time starting with the modem, then router, switches etc.
I don't think it's OS related (XP & Win 2K); service is RoadRunner cable, so
not confined to DSL.
Nor is it RR changing my non-static IP. IP addr right now is same as has been
since Feb.

Welcome to the club.

They did a line test and of course it works fine so they say the problem is

I would advise talking to your ISP. If this is a frequent problem, they may
have an answer for you.

Our home computer does the same thing, I just figured that Vista and DSL can
only stand each other

for 2-3 hours then they have a fight and quick talking to each other <g>

I do have a XP laptop I need to connect to the DSL the next time it quits
working and see if that works.

Nope! I have and use Vista and have NOT had that issue. Watch packets and
log them. Back trace and you can see if it is your ISP or OS or NIC.

Have two separate computers within reach and see if it happens to both then
you know it is NIC or ISP. NIC includes and not limited to NIC card, hub but
I hope switch, or router. Oh let's not forget Ether wire and that florescent
light and interference! When they switch the light on <g> but really check.
Emmitt had a good story on that last year.

  Sincerely,

  Paul

I tired that but no luck, I just blame Vista.

  Thanks

Try rebooting your router. I have to do that periodically with my ADSL
connection. Off/wait/On and things come back to normal speed. I have no idea
what causes this, and I certainly don't want to try and figure it out with
someone over the phone.

I do not have that problem but for the past week or so I loose connection to
the internet 2-3 times a day but I can still email.

The only thing that seems to let me reconnect to the internet is rebooting.

  Strange....?
