I could not have said it any better than the attendees of the first
R:BASE eXtreme 9.0 SAT held this past weekend in Indianapolis.
It was an exceptional event, which gave me the pleasure to share the
knowledge with our esteemed R:BASE users and Authorized Developers
who wanted to get a jump start with R:BASE eXtreme 9.0.
I am truly overwhelmed with your personal comments and feedback. They
mean so much to me personally and the members of R:Dream Team who have
worked so hard to bring you the best of R:BASE.
My sincere thanks to Bill Downall for coordinating this exceptional
event and bringing my special Starbucks drink every day. That was
so thoughtful of you, Bill.
Keep an eye on the upcoming updates of R:BASE eXtreme 9.0 that will
include all your suggestions and requested features.
Enjoy the ride and congratulations for being the first!
Very Best R:egards,
Razzak.

Merriam-Webster says eXtreme means:
a: existing in a very high degree
b: going to great or exaggerated lengths :
c: exceeding the ordinary, usual, or expected
And it's true. Everything is familiar (but much better looking).
And everything goes way beyond what you've seen before. We've
only seen the unveiling presentation so far, Thursday night.
Today we start with the hands-on Super-Advanced Training.
I know you're envious that you couldn't be here. From what we've
seen so far, you have reason to be. We'll tell you more later.

A few of the highlights from the first full day with RBASE 9.0 eXtreme:
Many many new themes, but also the ability to inherit the look
and feel of the computer's current Windows XP or Vista theme.
GUI and drag-and-drop ways to do almost anything you could ever want
to do. To copy a table, or a form, or a group of four forms, or a view,
or a stored procedure, or lots of other things from one database to
another, just "drag" it to the desktop or a folder, connect to the
target database, and drag/click or run the icon that resulted from your
drag.
Much improved Query builder, handling really complicated views
A new "link label" control in forms, that lets you do things like write
html that will run R:Base program files.
In "Enhanced DB Grids", totals or averages or counts at the bottom
In those same Enhanced DB Grids, add "Filters" at the top of columns,
and users can search through the data for any value they type into the
filter boxes.
Lots of cool things you've never seen in scrolling regions: images,
radio buttons, radio groups, date/time pickers...
In an Enhanced DB Grid, make a column into a progress bar, or a
hyperlink, or a multi-select checkbox, or a lookup into another table
Countless ways to make programmers more productive, in the editor, in
the debugger, in the designers, even at the R> prompt Others may chime
in with things that impressed them, that I forgot in the list above.

Subject: More on eXtreme 9
For anyone that has been to SAT training, you know that this is an
exhausting time; the end of day 1 and the anticipation of what's ahead for
day 2.
RBTI rolled out their newest software child in Indianapolis and for those of
us who came; there has been plenty of amazing surprises. Once again, they
have NOT disappointed their users or their developers. Their latest
offering, eXtreme 9.0, clearly lives up to its name.
Many of the new features were discussed yesterday on this list. I'll just
add, that for us "old timers" that still use the R:Prompt, we've seen some
improvements there too. The new Command History is a fully dockable window
that you can choose a previous command from the list and re-execute it (and
YES you can turn off the history if you don't want to see it too). But for
you GUI lovers, prepare to be amazed all over again. The new & improved GUI
interfaces are just great. As discussed the enhanced DB Grid and Scrolling
Region do not disappoint. Even though Razzak says there are only 3 new
objects, the enhancements to nearly every existing object are too many to
try and list.
If you are worried about your old databases and app's, RBTI has spent more
hours than I can imagine making our life easier. Razzak showed us how all
your plug-in calls to RBTI created plug-ins (whether for 7.6 or V8) work
WITHOUT CHANGING the code with V9. The conversion v9 is painless and your
apps don't need to be changed at all.
If you've ever complained or said anything negative about the icons or
toolbars in R:Base, you'll have plenty to appreciate now. It looks like
RBTI has spent as much time improving the look & feel as they have turbo
charging the speed. Have I mentioned the speed - my socks are so far gone I
gave up looking for them.
Even though one of the attendees hasn't been able to get the new version to
run on his laptop (I think he needs to buy a real computer ;') he still had
good things to say here about this newest product from RBTI.
I for one want to thank EVERYONE at RBTI for their unmatched dedication to
the developer and user community. Extreme 9.0 clearly demonstrates that
they listen to what we have asked for and have provided that and beyond.
Many thanks to you Razzak and the RBTI team.
A grateful and overwhelmed developer and user.

Subject: eXtremely Overwhelmed: R:BASE version 9.0
Having attended the first presentation of R:BASE eXtreme 9.0, with a
few hours to go in this SAT, I am overwhelmed with all the new
enhancements.
Upon first presentation, the classy rework of all design tools (form,
report, rbedit, database explorer) is readily apparent resulting in
a very clean and legible environment for the developer great look
and feel!
RBTI has been eXtremely busy these past 2 years and this version bears it
out (would we expect anything else?)! Here are just a few enhancements:
- Automated Form and Report version number recordation incremented by
1 - upon any revision or save process.
- Custom colors can be saved to an external file in Form designer
- A souped-up Query Builder, can now build complex queries with QBE (e.g.,
outer, inner joins, etc..)
- Single or multi select table definition unload with DB Explorer (Tables)
- Single / multi / all select of forms for compression/un-compression
(decompression?)
- Ruler now available in Forms Design
- Enhanced DB Navigator built-in Record # of ## !
- Form tab page control orientation selectable in Form Designer
- Enhanced DB Grid wow! With footer band can replace several of my
reports currently to screen for my users/clients
- Built-in ver. 9.0 RBEditor with many of the standalone RBEditor program:
compare by content, block content vertically (shift+alt+down arrow, and
more)
- Report Designer new property command: PROPERTY REPORT CANCEL TRUE bail
out for user in Before Generate EEP, or, password protect report printing.
Converting my 800 mb RBG76 to RBG90 (32 bit pointers) was a snap, simply
connect and open database. Converting from 7.6 to 9.0 (64 bit pointers)
with intermediate step through 8.0 took less than 5 min 30 sec.
There are many more enhancements in the report designer not discussed here,
weve still an hour and half to go! I know Ive a lot more to pour over and
digest in this version.
Thank you Razzak and RBTI fantastic work and as always, much appreciated!
Also, thank you Bill Downall for making the arrangements for this SAT in
Indianapolis! Enjoyed a great stay and the camaraderie with fellow R:BASE
Developers.

I agree with Brad that Version 9 looks very good with the date of
when a form or report was last edited (I'm really looking forward
to using that), drop-and-drag options expanded in many parts of
the program. The enhanced DBGrid looks great, lots of new form
options with lots of hints thrown in to boot (F11 key for properties,
F5 for sample code). The specific hints on development tasks from
Razzak and the other developers will help me get the sub 8 font size
into my reports. I will have to try out the crosstab report for a
new idea that emerged at the training.
I found many of the new features to show great productivity potential
for the developer.
Thanks to all the efforts of Razzak and the R:Base team and the fellow
developers at the training. It was a real honor to be one of the first
to get hands on the eXtreme version 9 product.

To All,
After the unveiling on Thursday evening of the v90 Extreme version
it was apparent that there had been a "great deal" of work by the
team at RBTI, but after we got a look at the nuts and bolts of it
on Friday and Saturday, all the little nuances that you wouldn't
even think of, that had been added, shifted your perception to
more like a "Hurculean" amount of work had been done.
The emphasis was definitely tilted towards making the developers
work environment more productive, which will result in time saved,
not in little bits and pieces, but in gobs and hunks. The result
will be either in greater rewards for the time the developer works
or reduced time on a project to make the developer more competitive.
In either event, it is good news for everyone.
The polishing of the tool palettes to include new controls on steroids
is indicative of the good folks at RBTI efforts to bring us the best
of the best, to make it possible to provide applications and solutions
for our customers that we can be sure will withstand the acid test of
the business world.
To be certain, the best days are ahead, so get current, get excited,
get involved and move forward with v90 Extreme!

To All,
I wish to thank Bill Downall for his work on putting together the
R:BASE eXtreme 9.0 training held in Indy this past weekend. His
efforts allowed this program to come off without a hitch, including
the important aspect of delivery to Razzak his morning Starbucks.
There have been many comments over the weekend about the ins and
outs of v9. I wish to echo all of them. It's hard to say what may
be the coolest new feature but two come to mind.
1. The inclusion of all the add-on tools in one product. No more
having a dozen RBL's floating around.
2. The ability to add header and footer bands to a DB-Grid. This
looks like a really useful feature (think QuickBooks report).
Those in attendence that were concerned about Carolyn and my
traveling safety, rest assured that we returned in one piece
yesterday (Sunday) after at PDX at 4PM PDT. Not quite as fast as
getting to IND but a reasonable day.
Finally to Razzak and RBTI, THANK YOU for spending the last 2 year
and 2 months developing this fine addition to the developers arsenal.
I realize that it is officially beta but it works pretty darn good.
It only took just under 7 minutes to convert our 1.5GB database to V9.

Thanks to Razzak, the Dream Team and all the support with him for a
major upgrade to our venerable R:Base. Just when I thought what the
heck more can they add, they added more that will make us developers
more productive and give users what they need. There's much more
drag'n'drop, nifty form and report enhancements and greatly improved
system security and administration (Stored Procedures might even be
fun now :)
The new features in DB Grid, like bands and calculations, and some
ideas brewing for reports, will start to blur the functionality
between forms and reports. If I may quote: "Stay tuned..."
And Jan, thanks to Carolyn for picking up lunch both days for us.
Sometimes it's nice to take a break and get away for an hour, but
it interrupts the momentum. I found the casual lunch "at work"
worked out fine. Glad you arrived home SnS.
Congratulations on a job well done.

Razzak and the Dream Team have exceeded expectations yet again.
This may still be a Beta, but it's nearly ready for "prime time."
But one of my favorite features is the return of the "Gumby R" as
the new desktop icon.
