What is the limitation for length here Defining Path/Dir etc.... I recall a limit that the string can only be so long.
Perhaps mapping this dir to a drive letter and then only searching that drive? I once ran in to the limit once but forgot it length. The problem that has mysterously arose is that I have been naming just the 8 digit filename files by adding text to the end using the ? placeholder character. Now for some reason, the placeholder is not acting consistently in that Dir ABCD???.??? returns all files such as ABCDEFGHIJK.xxx even though there are many more characters than designated by the (3-???) placeholders. I have several hundred archive files that prove the rename command worked in the past. Now it does not. All file names start out such as RC20090801.001, RC20090801.002, RC20090801.003 etc. The rename command should rename them to RC20090801sent_0824.001, RC20090801sent_0824.002, RC20090801sent_0825.003 and has done so in the past for hundreds of files. This weekend it stopped working. The voldfile RC??????.??? now picks up all files that start with RC, even if the filename has more that 8 characters. This did not use to happen. I.E. previously the above voldfile would not include any RC20090801sent_0824.001 files as they were longer than 8 characters. It seems like the single character wild card is not working now for some reason. I have checked the single character wildcard and it is set properly.
