Paul:  Sounds like you just have to figure out what's more important to 
you.  Yes, deleting and adding rows to a permanent table will make the .rb2 
file grow bigger.  How often does the database get reloaded?    Temp tables are 
the perfect solution but you do have to connect the database.

I can't remember your original post anymore -- did you say that you're just 
checking if a file exists?   Can't you check for the file existence without 
having a database connected?
