It's not been demonstrated to work previously; this is the first time
I've tried it. I've reproduced the error on another workstation in the
meantime, so it's not specific to a particular installation.

I will take the matter up with Avery support and if I learn anything
useful I will post it here. In the meantime, I'm dumping R:Base to
.DBF, which DesignPro can read.

Some of you are probably thinking "Why not just use R:Base to produce
your labels?" We've used DesignPro (and its earlier versions called
LabelPro) for many years. It's a dedicated label application and,
most importantly, handles blank line suppression and "shrink to fit"
automatically. Shrink to fit is important in large jobs where you
want to design a label that looks good but don't want to worry about
the occasional very long line that might overflow. So far as I am
aware, R:Base cannot do both blank line suppression and shrink to fit
at the same time, and Autosize is not the same thing as shrink to fit
in any case. (I make these statements with the usual expectation on
this list that I might be about to learn something.)

The traditional approach to mailing labels has been to use a fixed
width font and make it small enough so that the longest field to be
displayed will fit on the label. That results in labels that look
like junk mail or a letter from the IRS, but at least they won't
overflow. Overflow on a mailing label is very bad, as it may result
in an undeliverable letter. Bottom line: If you want to create a
good-looking label, using proportional fonts at larger sizes, you need
a label application that does shrink to fit.

On the down side, DesignPro is rarely updated, has a
less-than-intuitive interface, is poorly documented, and has too many
quirks. We often find it frustrating to use.
