As users of Microsoft Word 2007 know, the ability to add POSTNET bar
codes to envelopes is no longer available. Here's the Microsoft
explanation:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA101091591033.aspx

"Periodically, the United States Postal Service (USPS) changes the way
it calculates postal bar codes. When this happens, bulk mail that uses
the bar codes generated by Word may not be accepted by the USPS. To
avoid providing bar codes that may become obsolete, Microsoft has
removed this feature from Office Word 2007."

I'm assuming this must be a real issue, although it seems odd that
something so basic would be subject to change with the frequency
suggested by the Microsoft decision. Isn't POSTNET just a binary ZIP
(or ZIP+4 and carrier route) and a check digit?

In any event: Is the R:Base POSTNET bar code compliant with the
current spec, and is this something that is checked from time to time?
Possibly RBT licenses some code from a vendor whose business is to
track these obscure issues?
