Have you tried VLC player? It does a great job of playing EVERYTHING and even auto-syncs sound to video. This may isolate the possibility that WMP is the issue. I'm not too familiar with SATA driver control, but do remember in ATA days there was a DMA/PIO setting for the IDE controller that helped tweak speed/buffering issues.
