Karen, On one of my applications I make the text color dark green if a popup is available. It also tells them to double click for a list via the "Hint". My users have told me that system works well for them.

Back in DOS days, a help message "press <whatever> for popup list" was noticeable enough. In windows I don't like depending on Hints because they don't help unless you're hovering over the field. I've used a bunch of different methods. 1. Make the field background a different color 2. Put an indicator after the label, like: Account >> 3. Put a graphic, like an arrow, by the field or label.
