Gunnar,
Thanks for inquiring - fortunately we are fine with no damage to our house and the power was back on late yesterday. (We did lose about 12,000 litres of water out of our pool though - must have been quite a wave generated in that - the level went down by about 300mm - no leaks -it just went over the top and out.) Others haven't been so lucky with many brick buildings badly damaged and in some cases the facades or walls falling down completely. It certainly was a pretty interesting time though as the shaking went on for quite a while. There have been many good aftershocks - you can generally hear the noise first then the house starts to shake again. With a bit of luck there will be no second large shake, although I see that many years ago one large one was followed by another magnitude 7 five weeks later so who knows. There are some photos on the following link if anyone is interested. http://www.stuff.co.nz/4095395/7-1-earthquake-photos (Thanks also to Razzak who sent me an email yesterday to check that things were OK.) Just had another good shake as I write this.
