Yes, there is no free lunch and I suspect that MS will charge for Windows Essentials at some point. It would seem that a virus software company could just implement the virus checks researched and implemented by others. No need to spend all that time/money tracking them down yourself. A bit of a cynic, I do think that some viruses are developed by virus software companies. Then they would be the first one to send out the fix!

I dont know much about Windows Essentials, but keep in mind that the old saw You get what you pay for. has a pretty good track record.
Before you decide, do look at Vipre (Sunbelt Software.) Theyre much like the RBTI of Anti-Virus. Good people, great product, excellent pricing.
