Jim:  Yes I think my problem was that it was the last dbedit on the form.  
The next landing place was a button, but apparently that isn't good enough 
for the color setting to stick.  I would have thought that exiting to a 
button would be a valid exit (the button is not a speed button).   I can't 
rearrange the form, so locating a dummy editable variable field underneath the 
last field took care of my problem!
