Dennis, Also, you can get an external enclosure (IDE or SATA), install your current "damaged" drive and then connect it to another computer via USB; there is a very good chance that you will able to see and access/recover your files if you do not have backups. I keep enclosures with me at all times and I have been able to recover data from damaged drives from clients, at least a half a dozen times in the last year alone; they are relatively inexpensive ($10-$20).
