thank you

I did find on Google search:

That's not a Windows limitation, its a File System limitation - FAT32 is limited to a single file no larger than 4GB, NTFS is limited to a single file no larger than 16TB (terabytes) minus 4KB, using 4KB cluster size.

So it is now clear for me that if a R:BASE file is larger than 4Gb the file system of NFTS should be used for Win32 systems.

Marco,

The 32/64 reference in the RBase version has nothing to do with the operating system.

It has to do with the pointer size used in the RBase db Engine which directly addresses the Size of the db files.

The RB 32 series has the 2GB limit while the RB 64 series has the 23million TB limit, with both RB 32 and RB 64 being compiled with a 32bit compiler, which will run on both 32 and 64 bit windows operating systems.

It will likely be several iterations (versions) into the future before a windows 64 bit OS will NOT run 32 bit software at all. There is a 32 bit subsystem in place to accomodate the 32 bit software, just in the sense that the Windows OSes have supported DOS programs, more or less, to have a method of running some of the software that now dates to (antiquity?) old times....

Interesting reply.

So if I am right you can use R:BASE 9.0/9.1 64 both on Windows 32 and 64 but what will be the R:BASE database limit on a 32 and 64 Windows ? If the database is > 2Gb can this be used on Win 32 or is Win 64 min ?

Comparison:
http://www.rbase.com/rbg91/compare.php

Is there any experience using R:BASE 9.0/9.1 32/54 on Windows 32/64 and what are the results of using more CPU or Memory or the server or on the client when using R:BASE in a network with or without R:BASE on the client ?

Just so you know, 9.1 versions are not written to address 64 bit versions of windows. The Delphi compiler is 32 bit.

32 bit software will still run on 64 bit Windows as long as the installation program is smart enough to distinguish between 32 bit and 64 bit Windows as the current installers for RBase 9.x are.

So, Daniele, the hurdle you face is placing the RBase files in the correct location to make it function properly.

Since 6.5 is no longer supported, unless someone has already figured it out and is willing to share with you, I believe you are on your own with this one.

One has to ask the motivation for your client wanting to use the 64 bit server version to begin with.

Unless there is some specific 64 bit software that runs on the server that can take advantage of the choice of O/S, I don't understand the benefit (excluding the extra GBs of addressable memory) if the server is mostly a file server.

Hi Daniele,

Depending the Windows 64 version (win 2003 64 - win xp 64 - win vista 64 - win 7 64 - win 2008 64 or win 2008 r2 64) it is possible to run 32 bit software on windows 64 in 32 bit compatible mode.

If there is buget I would sugest to update the R:BASE software from 6.5 to the latest release 9.0 or 91 64 bit to benefit from both new features and more memory support of Win 64 systems.

Best regards,
Marco
