Long ago I had the same problem at several sites that had switched
from NT4 to 2003. One customer's tech discovered that changing
optimistic file locking (I can't recall, on/off) solved the problem.
However, some time later the issue returned, and changing that setting
didn't make any difference. I always put it down to an update, but
never really knew. At the time I was running NT4 (couldn't replicate
the problem) and wasn't inclined to set up a system under 2003 to
track it down.
