Another approach is to use a batch scanner. You can scan the inventory and
then return to a PC and unload the scanner memory into RBASE. I have
several clients that use batch scanners and they are very pleased with the
results. One advantage with the batch method is that there is no RF,
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection required. One client took their batch scanner
to a business that they were buying, scanned their inventory, and brought
the inventory back to their business to analyze inventory. I'm sure the
batch scanner would not work in all situations but if your inventory has a
bar code on every unit the batch scanner is worth considering. I haven't
priced them recently but I believe they are about $800 for a commercial
grade scanner (Symbol/Motorola).

Larry,

(Sorry. A little late continuing this thread.)
You have a hand scanner running your RBase app remotely so you can update
RBase forms directly?

That sound like what my customer needs when they are performing a physical
inventory. No need to upload data since you are working directly with the
data base. What is the approx cost for one of those scanner/smartphones?

TIA,

Dennis

Thanks Larry,

I don't see a downside to this approach. The user is taking his Windows PC
in his pocket.
Whatever restrictions placed on that network user when they are logged into
their Windows PC stay with them when they make their rounds through the
plant with their pocket PC (smartphone). In my situation, even one user
logged in at a time would be OK.

We have a client testing a hand-held scanner (similar size to a touch-screen
phone) on their factory floor RDP-ing into a machine running their R:Base
app. Took a little setting up on the scanner, but works well.

At a customer yesterday and one of the engineers had his Windows desktop
from his PC on his smartphone using "Terminal Services". I guess we don't
need Windows on a smartphone, just remote access to a Windows PC with our
RBase app.

Anyone else think this might work for your RBase application?
