I have one of my requests to natively link other R:Base databases without using odbc. I think it used to be possible many moons ago but somewhere it was removed.
The "other" guys you can link to other similar databases natively without having to use odbc. We had a few bumps but it was well worth the change. One of the features that really helped was the reduction in time required to connect to a database. We log activities in our application to a separate R:Base database. In 7.6, the time required to connect to the other database and then reconnect to the original database was prohibitive. As a result we used ODBC and SATTACHed the activity logging table. With runtime, though, the ODBC driver is not available. No problem in 9.1! The time required to CONNECT to the logging database, INSERT into the logging table and re-CONNECT to the original database is under 300 ms.
