In the earliest 7.x days, speed buttons were one of the few buttons available to us. And speed buttons have always acted that way -- focus is kept in the last field you were on. For that reason, I don't think I have a single speed button in any of my clients' applications. I remember asking on this forum once if anyone had a reason where you would want to click a button without changing focus, but I don't remember if anyone came back with anything...
