Jim: In doing temp views/tables, RBase relies on the location of your "scratch" setting and I've seen that "internal sort" error before if there was a problem. Either a user has lost his "write" ability to that location, or there isn't enough space or something prevented RBase from writing to that scratch location. What are you scratch settings?
