I often bring Excel data into text columns, using a temporary table,
when there are dates and times and convert after.

My experience importing dates and times from Excel is spotty. For
instance, times defined in Excel as '13:30' don't import at all.

The target columns are appropriately defined with DATE or TIME data types.
I'm using the RBase defaults for date and time formats:
Date:
Format: MM/DD/YYYY
Sequence: MMDDYY
Year: 30
Century: 19
Time:
Format: HH:MM
Sequence: HHMM
