I had a customer once who invented their own date data type. If you asked
for a person's birthday, you had to be able to deal with any kind of
partial answer, unknown month, day, or year, and then to be able to report
the date to them as 00000000, yyyymmdd, yyyy00dd, yyyymm00, 0000mmdd,
yyyy0000, or even  0000mm00, 000000dd. We ended up storing three integer
columns.
