Dick,

I don't know of any reasons why you couldn't add a column without removing 
indexes and computed columns; I do it all the time without any problems. It 
might be time to do a database rebuild using the RELOAD or UNLOAD ALL options.

Finally gave up, deleted all indexes and the one computed column, made changes 
and fixed indexes and computed col.
All is good. I just could not understand why I could not even change the name 
of an existing unused column till I cleared all the indexes and computed 
columns.
