Buddy:

You supplied the missing key. With a slight modification:
SET VAR vq TEXT = (CVAL('Quotes'))
SET VAR vGreatFall TEXT = ('(t1.Humpty + ' + .vq + ', ' + .vq + ' + t2.Dumpty)')

... I get the desired result:

(t1.Humpty + ', ' + t2.Dumpty)

... which now fits into the SELECT statement:

SELECT t1.Humpty , +
    t2.Dumpty , +
    &vGreatFall
    ...

I shall cherish this Quotes thing. Thanks so much.

BTW: Anyone remember the outstanding "Vq" editor from Golden Bow Systems from the early 1990's?

I would do it like this

  SET VAR vq = (CVAL(‘QUOTES’))

SET VAR vGreatFall TEXT = ('(' + .vq + 't1.Humpty' + .vq + ',' + .vq + 't2.Dumpty' + .vq + ')' )

All:

I need to deliver this string into an ampersand variable:

(t1.Humpty + ', ' + t2.Dumpty)

... ala:

SET VAR vGreatFall TEXT = (t1.Humpty + ', ' + t2.Dumpty)

... and for the life of me I can't remember how to frame it up with quotes and parens.

?? Thanks
