Max number of tables in a select command

Does anyone know the maximum number of tables that can be 
used in a select command?

SEL LASTNAME FIRSTNAME ADDR1 STATELONG FROM PEOPLE, 
ADDRESS, STATELU WHE PEOPLE.ID = ADDRESSS.ID

How many tables can I list separated by commas before it no
longer works or is such a performance hit that it isn't 
worth it?
