You did better than I!   I set an autonumber on my TranHeader table, 
created a form such as you describe and tried it.   When pressing 
[Shift]+[F8] focus obviously shifted to the child table (as the button text 
on the parent table greyed) but the form display stayed on page 1.

If I press [F2] to add a row to the child table the form closes and I am 
back to the R>.

My normal procedure is to:
1. programmatically insert a row then
2. Get the row id with a
SELECT HeaderID INTO +
   vHeaderID IND vi1 +
   FROM TranHeader +
   WHERE COUNT=INSERT
then
3. call the form in EDIT mode and disallow adding rows to the parent table 
in the form.
Works like a charm.
