Thanks to everyone who responded -
I have learned rather a lot about the non-functionality MS has built
into Word. This exercise has demonstrated to me once again that MS confuses
increasing the amount of user effort needed to perform a simple task with
quality. One keypress in WordPerfect has become in Word many keypresses and
mouse clicks which never produce the needed information.
I did learn that Word97 will not present RTF documents properly if
it is short on memory. There is no error message, just a lot of garbage on
the screen.
