dates" where the computation is performed for both A and B rather than use
all values for A and B types from the table, and I haven't been able to
figure out how to incorporate such a condition into the vtot variable
calculation>

Are these conditions right?
You have a table with ColT,(Type),ColQ(Qty),ColC(Cost),ColD(Date)
You have a report that print ColD,ColQ,ColC,Vtotal(ColQ*ColC)
You have in the table ColT has values A & B etc.
Define the date range that is required?
Are the between dates defined by entry before the report is run?
Are between dates part of the where for printing the report?
