Phil,
I think I can answer this one. Use the
LOAD tablename FROM filename AS FORMATTED USING
colname firstposition lastposition, etc.....
Example
LOAD test FROM temp.dat AS FORMATTED USING id 1 10,
name 11 50, grade 51 60
