What does the ) mean in the following? It seems not to belong.
 '(s3B')

This command is supposed to print 'ACBDefgh' in bold on a HP PCL printer :

SET var vgras TEXT = ((CHAR(27) + '(s3B') + 'ACBDefgh')

There is a extra () level. It can be writen more simply :

SET var vgras TEXT = (CHAR(27) + '(s3B' + 'ACBDefgh')

Problem is not with the escape command itself ...
Since this mail, I discovered that the same command, sent the same way to
the same printer works with RBW6.1a and not with RBW6.5++ ....
