Jim,

        It sounds like you may have found a solution but I 
thought some of my past experience may help.  

        I've noticed when working with variables in reports
or forms that after a while of adding and changing them 
during the course of development they sometimes appear to 
be working incorrectly.  Nine times out of 10 a reboot of 
the windows OS solves the problem for me.  Seems windows 
losses track or something.  Of course I'm assumming you are
using R:BASE windows versions.
