I'm with the software guys on this.  Yes, a hardware firewall will keep
most of the bad guys out.  But a *good* software firewall will keep the bad
guys from phoning home as well.  Yes, good computing practices and
antivirus software can minimize your risk of getting hit by a trojan of
some sort.  Of course, some of the higher end hardware firewalls can do
this too (eg my Sonic Wall - which may not be Cisco, but is a way above my
LinkSys) can be upgraded to do outbound filtering.  But from what you are
describing, something like the Sonic wall may be more than you want.
