Dear Dennis,
I have yet to find there is a wrong time for truth and understanding,
especially if it gives my mates the ammunition to defeat ignorance
and prejudice.
I condemn utterly and without reservation what happened Tuesday last.
Violence like that is without justification. I feel it as much as if it had
happened here. I feel the same pain as if it were our Opera house
and Sydney Harbour Bridge that were destroyed. There has hardly
been a waking moment since that I have not thought about it or have
not been wondering what words I can say to ease the pain of those
physically closer but not spiritually, as there is not distance in the
spiritual universe.
I have absolutely no sympathy or compassion for the perpetrators and
wish them speedy despatch from this place. They have by their deeds
forfeited any and all rights - in my book.
One of my clients said last week to me that it made him feel hopeless,
like nothing could be done to prevent such attacks in the future. Such
is the feeling in this country that our government invoked clause 4 of
the ANZUS Treaty which means that if the US takes on someone as
an enemy our troops will be there alongside your marines.
But I see two great dangers in all of this.
One is in generalising the enemy. Already there
have been reports of attempts made on innocent lives and property
in America because of ignorant people generalising all people from
the middle east as enemies.
The other is in allowing one of the things that make America great
to be set aside for the 'protection' of us all. Personal Liberty.
I need not remind you how close this is to us all. Afghanistan is right
next to Pakistan and has already threatened Pakistan if it allows US
jets to use its air space.

My shift started Tuesday at 12 AM to 9 AM, and I work right across the
river near the Battery Park Tunnel that leads to the Towers, so I see a
beautiful clear view of the city at all times. At about 8:45 we heard the
first explosion, and they immediately said it was a terrorist attack, which
leads anyone with a half a brain to know that we knew ahead of time
about what was going to happen, and yet no control of it. When the
second plane hit the other Tower minutes later, I was just getting out of
the Tunnel to the scene.
