I just tried the following test using The R:edoubtable
R:BASE 2000 (ver 6.5++) for DOS, Build: 1.842xRT03.

SET VAR AFRT CURRENCY
SET VAR XFRT TEXT
SET VAR AFRT = .XFRT

No problem using above, either at the mighty R> prompt
or in a command file!
