Ah yes, back to this "we used to" situation.  It's 2001, not 1991.
10 years ago, 40 meg hard drives were fine.  10 years ago, 4 MB RAM was
fine.  10 years ago, 286 processors with no math co-processor, and no L2
cache was fine.  10 years ago, 8 characters was fine.  'Back in the day'
is not now.  Now is the age of 32-bit, soon to be 64-bit.  

It's time to move on to Pentium computers, 32 megs of RAM, and greater
than 18 character column names.
