Thanks, Dennis, for this little snippet of information - I have dragged one field often enough so maybe that's part of the problem.
I also have another theory now that I would like to put to the list: I seem to have cured my problems by ensuring that the line of dots that are the grid used for snapping to does NOT exactly match the size of the fields placed on the report so that there is a small amount of vertical space between the fields. The problem with this is that - as I am trying to create a text file in HTML format for my browser to read - I get semi-random blank lines in the file. I also notice this strange behaviour in the report writer: if I set the green section line(s) to a particular line(s) on the grid and then page-down and do some change and page back up again the green line(s) is/are not in _exactly_ the same place. This doesn't seem to cause a problem but it does make it more difficult to place fields accurately.
