I couldn't begin to guess what's happening at the OS level, but I 
know that there is some sort of timing issue under certain 
circumstances.  I've used pause to solve some problems as well, 
though the situation was different ... running eeps I think.  I've also 
had eeps and triggers executing simultaneously, with both reading 
the same error variable.  

My experience is more directly related to Ian's post earlier under 
"Re: is this a problem with RBase 2000 v6.5++ ??" which is 
closely related to this.
