Just before I started to receive the "Out of Dynamic Space" errors which also caused the failure to load the database from an "Unload" file, I had created a new table. Of the three "computed" columns in this table, I had inadvertently begun to enter the necessary expression in the default field instead of the expression field. Half way through doing this I realized I hadn't checked the "computed" box and then did. I again entered the expression and saved the new table.
As you know, when you check the "computed" box, the default field is replaced with the expression field. So I just didn't realize that the partial default setting was saved with the table. When I saved the table, I received no error messages from R:Base and everything seemed to be fine. I "assumed" that the partially entered default value was discarded. However, it was not. >From that point on, I couldn't unload the database to a file and then reload it from the file. I could, however, run the RELOAD and PACK commands on this database without any trouble. But now I started to run into flaky problems with my database, but with tables and operations that weren't at all related to this particular table. RBTI tech support told me that a flaw in the structure of one table can cause strange behavior from unrelated tables. They provided me with a place to start troubleshooting by suggesting that I unload only the structure to a file and then try to create a new database from the "structure-only" file. By doing that, I was able to see which table was created last before the table creation aborted. So I started by checking the first table that didn't get created and found the flaw. Many thanks and kudos to Ben Petersen (who sent me some assistance via private email) and the RBTI tech support team! Tony Anthony Schmidt President The Computery Ltd.
