While Windows XP is an excellent PnP OS, which works very well with newly
released hardware, it is not particularly good with certain legacy cards, or
hardware items that use the same chipset. Where possible, install hardware
items manually.

-- Install Windows XP on a bare system. (Remove all cards, leaving just the
video card.)

-- Install modem, NIC, SCSI, etc, one at a time, after successful Windows
installation.

-- Best option is to install manually, especially where legacy cards are
involved. This will avoid Windows picking a wrong driver for the card. For
example, the ESS 2838s chipset is used in a number of modems, which differ
only in the firmware and design. If you let Windows XP to automatically
install the ESS FM3623 Data Fax, PCI modem, it will end up picking the wrong
driver for this modem, thereby causing the system to crash at random
afterwards. (The correct driver for this modem is "ESS ES56H-PI Data Fax
Modem".) When this happens, the only way to correct the problem, as far as
I know, is to remove the partition, reformat the hard drive, and reinstall
Windows.

-- Windows XP is not compatible with certain hardware combinations. For
example, the combination of ECS K7S5A Socket A motherboard, ATI Rage II+ PCI
graphic card, and Windows XP does not allow the floppy drive to read or
write and produces an I/O error message, although installation appears to be
smooth and trouble-free and the hardware resources table in XP tells you
that these items are working fine, and you can format floppy diskettes. The
same ECS board, ATI card, and floppy drive work happily under Windows 98.

-- Always avoid using aggressive settings in CMOS during Windows XP
installation. Fine-tune afterwards.

The above strategy came from real life experience. Hope this info helps.
