As far as I know the only practical limit on how much data you can send to 
a file using SELECT is down to the operating system.

I regularly send in excess of 300,000 rows to a Sybase database using 
SELECT with no problem.  Maybe Gateway is your problem which I can't 
comment on as I do not use it.
