Hi Phil,

I have not tried Ghost. However, I know Nero version 5 works just as well
as Roxio CD Creator 5, but it caused random conflicts with my Fujitsu
scanner's TWAIN driver and the motherboard's chipset drivers. Hence, I
decided to drop Nero in favor of Roxio, and have had no problem.

I don't see how an external CD ROM drive would not work as long as the drive
is recognized as a device in Windows Explorer and your burner software
supports "drag and drop" in Windows Explorer. The way it works is that you
must use the CD burner utility to format the re-writeable CD. (I use Direct
CD, a component utility in CD Creator.) If the formatted CD allows you to
drag and drop files in Windows Explorer, then you can write batch files to
automate the process.

It is important to realize that when you use batch files to back up data to
re-writable CDs, the burner software is not required at all because copying
is performed totally independent of the burner software, purely a Windows OS
operation. Because of this, the backup files are not changed to "read only"
. You can also open and use the files on the CD without having to move them
to the hard drive first. However, you cannot use the CD on a foreign CD ROM
drive unless that drive is also re-writeable.

It should also be noted that it does not make sense to use one-write CD ROM
drives, unless you intend to create permanent archives of your data. Use
re-writeable CD ROM drives and re-writeable CDs.

BTW, if you use 10x speed re-writeable CDs, make sure that your CD writer
supports high speed re-write. If it does, there is usually a marker or
label on the faceplate of the drive saying so.

Using re-writeable CDs to back up data is a very economical and convenient
way to safeguard personal data or datasets smaller than 650 MB in total
size, the current maximum capacity of re-writeable CDs. Backing up to tapes
or hard drives is still my preferred way for data files larger than 650 MB.
