dBase 4 File

I saved some Excel data as a dBase 4 file.  Both column names and data were selected before saving in dBase 4 format.  After successfully attaching the file in RBase for Windows 6.5++, I discovered that the maximum text column length was only 28.  All text longer than 28 got truncated.  Is this a dBase 4 limit, or something else?   Thanks.   Stan Loo
