The Arial TTF font, in 8 pt., also has choked for me, not only on the
letter X but also on L and T, and not only in R:Base. It also does so
in WordPerfect and another program.

I think the problem is with the TTF font itself, and so I also have the
Helvetica font installed -- Arial is about the same as Helvetica -- so
when Arial gives me a fit, I just change to Helvetica and the problem
goes away.
