G'day Tom,

Got your message in Washington, DC (1,000 mi East of where I
normally live in Missouri).

I can see how editing live data by potentially many users would
complicate the
process. My example was primarily for entering new invoices using an
edit form on
a 'dummy' and a temporary table.

Our form had some options and calculations which complicated the
f7/f8 movement
from row to row. We did some things to make the subtotals pop to the
screen, calculate
fixed and variable shipping costs, local taxes and totals. Certain
products had limitations
on who could buy them as well as shipping costs varying with the
quantity. Some items
were sold as fixed or variable groups that had to be consecutively
numbered and tracked
for later assignment to the ultimate recipients.

Registration numbers were removed from a list of available
numbers and placed in
a list of numbers 'ordered'. These numbers then went to a table which
showed they were
'authorized to be shipped.' After being 'shipped' the numbers were
processed in a final way.

Editing the order along the way had its own challenges as its
processing depended upon
the stage of the order at the time the change needed to be made.

Because access to the orders was limited, it was not a problem
to lock the record while
it was being edited.

>The reason I settled on the solution I did was that it was the only
>way I could think of at the time that allowed real time updating of
>the data displayed was to use variables.

I often enjoy reading your recommendations and getting the
benefit of your experience.

        All the best.

        Randy Peterson

PS. We are entering a cherry blossom and daffodil spring season. Does
that mean it is autumn where you are?
