Stephen,
  I have used VEdit for about 10 years.  In addition to the utility you
desire, it does hundreds of others.  Ted Green, the author of VEdit (
http://www.vedit.com ) , has kept this a first rate product.  It is written
in Assembler.  If there is some strange thing that VEdit won't do, you can
make it do it by using its built-in (C like) macro language.  It comes in
both flavors (Dos and Windows)......
