My reason for posting the travel advisory was the potential impact on Conference attendees who are flying into Pittsburgh and taking a taxi or shuttle van to Monroeville because the construction will impact on travel time from/to the airport.
The Fort Pitt bridge/tunnel/freeway problem only affects those who are coming from/going to Pittsburgh Airport which requires passing through this construction jumble and downtown Pittsburgh. Anyone driving in from the east is not affected at all. Drivers from Cleveland stay on the Pa. Turnpike (I-76) to the Monroeville Exit -- Exit 6 -- and other than a couple of short overhead bridge rehab projects in Pa. they won't have any problems -- at least not until you have to negotiate your way through Monroeville traffic itself after exiting the turnpike. I'm not sure about the "southern" route from Columbus or Cincin- nati to Pittsburgh, but I believe there is a bypass which will get you around the Fort Pitt mess. It's "orange barrel season," as we Ohioans say, and I felt that at least a flag should be raised to air travelers to the Conference -- just one more headache in the already headache-prone air travel scene after 9/11. Also another tip: Be sure your computer is fully charged and ready to be turned on at airport security. The security people may want to see an active screen before they will pass the computer. On a recent trip, a friend's computer wasn't fully charged at the last check-in point and security completely dismantled it, looked at everything minutely, made him put the computer and parts into a box and send it as checked luggage. Needless to say, he wasn't very happy -- and it cost his company $400 to have everything reassembled and tested when he got home.
