I wish I could be at the conference, too, Razzak, but it's simply too
expensive for me to fly from the UK. I hope it goes really well for
everyone.

I did look at the virtual tour when you first announced it but not since nor
in relation to the problem of vertical spacing in reports which has come up
more recently. I'll take another look.

Okay, I've taken another look - it's different!! However, even with only a
56k modem the display is too fast to really see what's on offer. I'll take
your word for it, though, that all the problems will be resolved and I doubt
that Neil at Aspen Software will have to wait for my upgrade order this
time.

In the mean time, to try and solve my problem (and that's too strong a word
really because what I get works well as you can see if you look at the
source files from the demo I mentioned here last week) and to try to help
out Dan this is what I've discovered in W6.5++:

If I set the page length/lines to zero I expected not to get any page breaks
throughout the report and for the break headers and footers boxes to be
irrelevant. Unfortunately that's not the case but maybe my expectation is
wrong? As I recollect that's what happened in Dos. I have also set the page
orientation to none.

Anyway, I tried the four combinations of headers cleared/footers cleared;
headers ticked/footers cleared; headers cleared/footers ticked & headers
ticked/footers ticked. The only difference was that with both ticked I
sometimes got two page breaks instead of one when printing to a file. (There
are 4 breaks in the report but not 2 page breaks for each.)

The really strange thing is that before I started testing I had the lines
set to zero and both header/footer boxes cleared and I was getting a number
of space and a carriage return combinations followed sometimes by just a
carriage return between sections. For some reason I can no longer get back
to that! (I've checked a backup copy to make sure I know what the settings
were before.) It's not impossible that something else has changed but I
can't think what else might affect the vertical spacing. (I'm looking at the
output file in MS Word, by the way, which shows the special characters.) I
presume that the space and a carriage return combinations depend on the
spacing between the last object in a section and the section divider line
and the space from there to the first object in the next section:

...........................
Object snapped to dots above
...........................
--------------------------------section divider approximately evenly
........................... spaced between two rows of dots.
Object snapped to dots above

I can understand one blank row above and one below but I'm getting something
like 5 or 6 blank rows altogether between sections. I do not let objects
touch the divider line because it's too easy for them to jump sections if
they do. Maybe immediately adjacent "dummy" text objects containing spaces
would "fix" the number of lines?

>From my point of view if v7 prints to a file "properly" there's no point in
fixing anything in the current version - although I expect Dan would
disagree with that. Unfortunately I doubt that my investigation helps Dan in
any way either - which is a shame.

If I am able to test a beta version in the future then, obviously, this will
be one of my first areas of investigation, but, hopefully, it's already
been - or about to be - checked.

Regards,
Alastair.
