Another thing to look for -

One of my users kept unknowingly inserting high bit ASCII characters
(smiley faces, graphic text characters, etc.) into columns when entering
records with a columnar Edit.

The high bit ASCII characters were invisible in R:Base but when the data
was exported to any other program, like Excel, they became apparent.

Since the columns now contained the invisible character, the rows wouldn't
appear if a query was based on an "equals" operator, but sometimes would
when a "like" operator was used.

RScope, Reload, and Pack had no effect because there was NO corruption,
just unreadable data. The invisible data, however, would export using
Gateway or Unload as ASCII.

I discovered after a time that this user had her display set to large
fonts. When we reduced the font size, the problem seemed to go away.

Often users like to increase their screen font size, especially when their
displays are set to very high resolutions.

Or you might just have corrupt screen fonts on your system.

This might be an area for you to check.

Good luck!

I tried on my database and no problems. You might have a defective program
or disk. Try reloading the program.

Also, the example shown here.... does not fail in 6.5. Possibly it is a
setting that is different, I will check. AutoCom is OFF on both 6.5++ and
6.5.
