The interesting thing that I see from running your code is that Windows
and/or R:Base is not consistent:

If, for example you run the code at the R:> you will see one set of
characters from the WRITE command and - generally - a bar character in the
PAUSE command for the "non-standard" letters and numbers. You will also see
some that are simply different from each command - ASCII and ANSI codes,
fair enough, we have to live with them.

That is bad enough but if you then go to RBEdit and type the code for
[Alt](171), for example, the display is the fraction one-half but if you
type [Alt](0171) you get chevrons whereas at the R:> you ( I ) get a lower
case c with a line through it for [Alt](171) and chevrons for [Alt](0171).

Presumably this is going to vary depending on what country is defined in
Windows and the code page associated with it. However, I would have expected
consistency with any one program. I suppose the R:> is, more or less, a Dos
box and RBEdit is now a Windows editor.

I'm sure this "feature" has been mentioned here before, but it is worth
watching out for, though - especially for anyone who is using both Dos and
Windows R:Base with the same database.

Regards,
Alastair.
