Thought I'd add to Steve's comments. In RCode you can write your statement formatted as Steve did in his example, and with your cursor somewhere in the statement do [ctrl]-[alt]-[c] and past [ctrl]- [v] into the R> window. In the process RCode strips out the continuation +'s and you can test the statement. This feature saves me hours and hours. If you're using a version prior to 6.5++ be sure to open a couple lines at the top of new files or RCode will lock up doing this.
